Broward County Wildlife Education: Armadillo Exterminator
The destruction caused by an armadillo in your yard may have you reaching for the number of an exterminator. You need to keep in mind that exterminators are in the business of killing pests. An armadillo might be causing you substantial issues but killing it might be a bit extreme.
Exterminators
Exterminators use poison to eliminate insects. Therefore, this is probably the way that they will attempt to rid you of an armadillo. As armadillos eat mostly live insects and invertebrates they are not easy to poison. When the poison is successfully administered, it still takes days or weeks for them to die. The poison that is most often used is rat poison. This will cause internal bleeding and leads to an excruciatingly painful death for the animal. Exterminators are not trained to handle the removal of wild animals.
Why get rid of an armadillo
Armadillos are not aggressive and will not cause any injury to your family or pets. The main concern is the number of holes that they dig in search of food and shelter. The holes vary in size from relatively small to large enough to cause damage to the foundation of your home. The problems are dependent on where the armadillos have decided to dig. If they are undermining the structural integrity of your home it might be time to contact a professional.
Other options
There are various other options to try instead of contacting an exterminator.
· Building a fence around your property might seem a bit rash but it will keep out other pests as well. Chances are that if you have had a problem with an armadillo you will eventually encounter other pests as well. A fence will ensure that all critters are kept off your property. The initial investment will be recouped quickly as you will not have to repair damage or pay someone to get rid of unwelcome guests.
· Live trapping and relocating is another option. It might not always be as easy as it seems. Many states have laws against releasing wildlife. You will thus have to take the armadillo to have it destroyed. This is unfortunate, but some states will allow you to release it in a designated area. It is the most humane way to get rid of your problem. Do some research about the laws in your state before catching and releasing an armadillo where it may become someone else’s problem. Wildlife removal companies will be able to assist you with this.
· Using chicken wire to protect your plants and openings around your home is an inexpensive way to keep armadillos out. Make sure that you bury it deep so that they are unable to dig under.
· Wildlife deterrents could be an option. Some of them are more effective than others. It is worth trying a few to try and deter armadillos from choosing your property. There are motion-activated sprinklers and noise machines available that promise to scare the armadillo away. As soon as they come close enough a concentrated burst of water or a loud sound is emitted.
Your best option might be to contact a wildlife removal expert.
